A carnival with large rides took place during the weekend of the 4th of July, but this carnival didn’t happen outside of Toledo limits, nor did it occur in the downtown area. Instead, it happened on Bancroft and Rosedale, right in a residential neighborhood.
The sponsors of the event was Bethel Apostolic Temple as it held its first annual carnival/festival that it intends to hold annually around the 4th of July.
In addition to carnival rides, there were games, face painting, clothes and toy vendors, and free performances by some of Toledo’s local musicians, including the Young Professionals, Jesse Coleman, Chris Byrd and BOSS (Brothers of Soulful Sounds).
''We realized that the inner city didn’t have carnivals, so we wanted to be instrumental at bringing one to this area,'' said Belinda Pope, administrator of the church
David Hudson, who was there with his girlfriend and child, said, ''We don’t get something like this in our community and so I felt like coming and enjoying myself.''
Those who weren’t enjoying the rides could try their luck at various games. Still, others just sat in the shade and enjoyed the performances by local artists.
''This is really convenient,'' said Tuwanis James, who also brought her family. ''I don’t have transportation to go further out so this is very convenient for me.''
Some of the neighborhood children were so excited about the event that they were running around trying to figure out what exactly they would do next.
Tariq Jackson and his brother, Malik, both 7 years of age, were so overwhelmed with joy that could hardly tell how they were feeling.
''I’m excited about the rides,'' said a very happy Tariq. His brother said that he, too, enjoyed the rides the most.
''We’re not just trying to touch church faces but those that live in the neighborhood,'' Ms. Pope stated.
